Ares or Arey - in ancient Greek mythology, the god of war. It is part of the twelve Olympic gods.
Unlike Athena Pallada, the goddess of an honest and just war, Ares, differing in treachery and cunning, preferred war insidious and bloody, war for the sake of war itself. In Homer's works one can find Ares's identification with war and deadly weapons. Companions Ares is the goddess of discord Eris and bloodthirsty Enio. His horses, the children of one of the Eriny and Boreas, bore names: Flame, Noise, Terror, Glitter. Attributes of the god were dogs, a kite, a burning torch and a spear.
Ares was usually depicted as a mighty and mature warrior in armor with a sword in his hand and a helmet on his head.
