The McLaren MP4/4 is one of the most successful racing cars in the history of Formula 1. It was developed by the McLaren team under the guidance of designers Gordon Murray and Steve Nichols. On it, McLaren drivers won 15 of the 16 races in the 1988 season, winning a record 199 points at that time

The McLaren MP4/4 chassis, a pair of Senna and Prost racers, and finally the new Honda RA168E turbo engines, became a winning combination for the team. However, teams using turbo engines had problems due to the fact that the FIA imposed a fuel consumption limit for cars with turbines up to 150 liters for the entire race distance. Honda engineers urgently refined the engine in terms of reducing fuel consumption. The team also experimented with an active suspension, but these tests did not have time to finish by the beginning of the season. The car did not participate in tests until the first race, but this did not prevent Senna from taking pole position at the very first 1988 Grand Prix in Brazil.

Prost drives an MP4/4 at the 1988 Canadian Grand Prix.
Prior to the 1988 season, the most dominant car racing in Formula 1 was the Lotus 79, but the MP4/4's successes surpassed all the results shown before. The season was an easy ride for the McLaren team: the team won 15 of 16 races, winning 10 doubles (1st and 2nd places at the finish) and 25 podiums (out of 32). The dominance was interrupted only once, in Monza, when Senna, who was leading a lap and a half before the finish, had an accident, overtaking Jean-Louis Schlesser, who was lagging a lap behind, and Prost came off after a rare Honda engine failure that year. The race was won by Gerhard Berger of Ferrari. Perhaps the most telling example of MP4/4's unconditional dominance was the Monaco Grand Prix. Ayrton qualified 1.5 seconds faster than Alain, who, in turn, was a second ahead of the rest of the peloton.

At the end of the season, McLaren easily won the Constructors' Cup. In the drivers' standings, Senna (who had fewer points) beat Prost according to the rule in force at the time — only the eleven best results were counted, but relations between the riders deteriorated and did not recover while they were performing together.

At the end of the year, the McLaren MP4/4 was awarded the "Racing Car of the Year 1988" award by the British magazine Autosport
